Literacy expert Sharon Callen helps teachers understand and assess how motivated students are to read.
Many teachers will say "my students aren't motivated to read!" But how much do we really know about this?
We test students, effectively and sometimes not effectively, in a number of ways to find out what they're doing and how they're performing as readers, but we don't often take the time to discover a child’s self concept as a reader or the value they place on reading.
Are you determining the reading motivation of your students?
What can teachers do to support reading motivation for students, and how can we make an effort to understand an individual’s motivational needs?
Designing effective and engaging instruction means considering the motivational needs of students. This is where we utilise the motivation to read profile tool, developed by Malloy, Marinak, Gambrell and Marzoni, which supports teachers in creating motivating classroom contexts for literacy.
Sharon explains the tool and how you can use it.
