Episode Notes

When working with teachers and leaders, we are always working towards the best outcomes for all of our literacy learners and looking to enable highly effective outcomes.

This drives us to these considerations:

In this episode, we’ll look at this in relation to the English block in literacy learning.

To honour you our listeners as authentic teachers and leaders who are pondering, confirming and considering what your readers and writers need to grow in your classroom, I have created a ‘best effort’ document showing how you actually cover all high impact strategies every day with ease within a workshop model (Mini Lesson, Independent Practice, Share/Reflection). You might like to stop the episode and download the draft document so you can look at it as we proceed.

What are the High Impact Teaching Strategies?

The H.I.T.S. are 10 instructional practices that reliably increase student learning wherever they are applied. They emerge from the findings of tens of thousands of studies of what has worked in classrooms across Australia and the world. International experts such as John Hattie and Robert Marzano have synthesised these studies and ranked hundreds of teaching strategies by the contribution they make to student learning, including:

H.I.T.S. requires you to draw on both your deep curriculum knowledge and your skills in assessment for, as and of learning. Applying the H.I.T.S. effectively relies on tapping into your expertise to develop and implement rich, authentic learning tasks. Importantly, adept application of the H.I.T.S. will stimulate your students to take agency for, and reflect on, their own learning.

In this episode, find out how a workshop model (Mini Lesson, Independent Practice, Share/Reflection) provides the perfect framework for the H.I.T.S.to occur in your classroom with ease every day.

Enjoy!
